Sennen Cove is good for loads of reasons. It’s a mile or two from lands end on one of Cornwall’s kinda ‘toe’ bits (of which most locals think there are 6 – that’s an inbreeding joke for you all there), which means it gets proper battered by swell rolling in off the Atlantic. It works with swell from the north as well as the south, and depending where the swell’s coming from can throw u a range of sizes in different places along the cove, so is not only a pretty safe bet if you’re looking for a wave but is also pretty good for a whole range of skill levels. But most importantly the café does goddamn lovely chicken and bacon rolls.
Sennen Cove’s car park is close and there’s a board hire place down there too for all your foamy needs, a public toilet for all your loggy needs and a pretty-passable-if-a-bit-tourist-y pub (The Old Success) for all your post-wave chuggy needs. It’s a good sandy beach so give the kids a spade, help them dig a hole, put them in it and if you’ve timed the tides just right they’ll still be in there an hour or two later when you get out the water.
The downside is that it is pretty much the arse end of nowhere. And the arse end of a Cornish nowhere at that. So if you’re travelling down from outside the county don’t rely on there being too much in the way of public transport. The nearest train station to Sennen Cove is Penzance, about a 3 hour walk away (yeah, exactly, fuck that for a bag of hotdogs). According to Google there’s a bus, but it takes an hour, and if I know Cornwall at all it probably only operates once a year on the second Sunday after a successful autumn harvest or some shit.
Gwynver beach to the north is pretty good too. Overall the north end of the beach tends to be a bit bigger, and if you still haven’t learnt that you’re not as good at this shit as you once were there’s a reef about 100m out called Cowloes, which is bigger still, and has some great hidden rocks to lose fins, skin and consciousness on.
Overall though, Sennen Cove is really good for a range of abilities at a range of sizes, sometimes all on the same tide. And fuck me, those bacon rolls…
