Why is it good, alright, annoying or shit?:
I first surfed a 6’6 McCoy Nugget in the Mentawai Islands years ago and for my standard then it was probably the best thing I could have taken – waves to fun ration were through the roof and gave me the addiction/curse of chasing waves ever since
Geoff McCoy has been shaping boards for decades and while he has a faithful following his designs and philosophy seems to have a Marmite effect within the surfing community. He will always suggest you take as much size and volume as you can handle and his designs are certainly high volume, my 6’3 x 20’½ x 2’7/8 is 41 liters …. I’m 5’8 and 75kg (!!!)
That said I have found this board to be my go to board (4 years now) for me here on the South West of France’s fast, steep beach breaks. Easy to paddle with an early entry and a rocker that forgives some of the latest of drop; once on the wave it feels stable and planted. Added to that there is Geoff’s “Loaded Dome” which is located just in front of the fins and acts as a fulcrum around which the board pivots and turns. This means the McCoy Nugget is to be surfed off the back foot and once you realise this and when you get it right everything clicks into place (like any other then) but it does seem a lot easier for an intermediate surfer like me. For turns you look where you want to go and it just follows, it really does give a sense of confidence.
If you are looking for an all-rounder or stepping down from a long board/mal the McCoy Nugget is an ideal choice. If you are an advanced surfer who absolutely rips then you could go shorter than you thought possible but that goes against Geoff’s ideas, but hey try it. To quote the guy, his boards are ‘designs to free your mind’.
For the hot-dogging beautiful people who will probably drink Martinis too it won’t have the look for them as it certainly not a tooth pick but again giving most people a high performance board would be like giving them the keys to a Ferrari – no way will it be used to its full potential and it is the same for the McCoy Nugget – Catch more and surf more waves = more progression and more fun.
So, for me the McCoy Nugget is a really good board from 3 foot to a solid 8-10 feet at Hossegor. I am the limiting factor not the board. The wide and thick dimensions will put a lot of people off, possibly because people have no concept of what is going on which is why I’ve put a link to the Shred Show review below and to Geoff’s website so you can check out the message from the horse’s mouth so to speak.
What would make it better (if anything)?:
Having an original shaped by the man himself.
Would you buy another when this one falls apart?:
Definitely.
